Southwest Mississippi’s Autumn Foliage For 2011
It's Thanksgiving and we're at the end of the Autumn foliage season in southern Mississippi. The colors were spectacular in many areas of Lincoln and Franklin Counties. It is my belief, though, the colors were not as spectacular this year as they were the last. Perhaps the lack of rain and a couple of hard frosts accounted for the fast turn of colors that didn't last as long.
I didn't have much time to shoot autumn colors this year as I wanted to and certainly didn't get to tour the Smoky Mountains as usual, but I managed to capture a few shots around the local area.

Many residents of Lincoln County (especially West Lincoln area) are familiar with the Low Water Bridge on McCall Creek Road. Here is a photo taken of the autumn foliage at McCall Creek.

An old homestead rests in a wooded area. It looks to have been left there intentionally, because all of the old growth pine trees are no longer there. A few Magnolia trees exists where the front porch use to be.

When driving along the dirt roads of Mississippi, you'll discover scenes like this. Autumn colors from Sweet Gum trees and other species of plants decorate the countryside in October and early November of every year.

The rolling hills of Franklin County features many ups and downs along the gravel roads. This photo, taken in the Pleasant Valley area, features a winding curve with autumn colors.

Trains no longer frequent this track as they use to during the old days. This stretch of railroad is located in Lucien, Mississippi. It's a small town in Franklin County that is really no longer a town. The "streets" remain, though, with a few old homes that existed during the pioneer logging days. Automobiles account for the reason why the town quickly dried up.

Autumn colors were also visible at Okhissa Lake in the Homochitto National Forest. I took advantage of the Veteran's Day Weekend free pass to shoot some photos.

This shot was taken on a trail in the West Lincoln community. A simple combination of leaves can create a work of art.

Autumn colors sprout on a wooded trail in the West Lincoln community. I took this photo at sunset, before going to Wednesnday night service at church.

This is my favorite shot from this year. As I was driving home from work, I passed the tractor shop at the corner of Highway 84 and Natchez Avenue. The sun was setting and produced an awesome effect with the slight shade of autumn colors.
Those are my autumn shots until next year! Happy Thanksgiving!!
